Millimeter-wave phased-array transceiver achieves highly efficient communication across the entire 57–71 GHz band
To realize the ultra-high-speed, large-capacity wireless communication required in the Beyond 5G/6G era, we have developed a broadband phased-array antenna and transceiver IC that supports the entire 5G millimeter-wave band (5G NR FR2-2 n263 band: 57–71 GHz).
This achievement was presented at the 2026 IEEE/JSAP Symposium on VLSI Technology & Circuits, held in Honolulu, USA, from June 14 to 18.
Key points
- Developed an antenna and transceiver IC that achieves highly efficient, stable communication across the entire 57–71 GHz 5G millimeter-wave band
- An “aperture-tuning antenna” — which optimizes the antenna’s effective radiation aperture at each frequency by adjusting the internal current distribution — is integrated with the transmit/receive circuitry, enabling both wideband operation and a compact, low-loss design
- Expected to contribute to ultra-high-speed, large-capacity communication infrastructure for the Beyond 5G/6G era, as well as next-generation services such as high-definition XR
